NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i Reviews (Should You Buy It?)

Cardio is an important aspect of any fitness routine, but unfortunately, many forms of cardio can be hard on the body. Running on pavement or even walking on a treadmill can be stressful on the joints and muscles, and many people choose to forego cardio altogether rather than deal with high-impact workouts.

Luckily, there is another way to get your daily dose of cardio: the elliptical machine. Ellipticals are designed to reduce impact while still allowing you to burn calories, lose weight, strengthen the core and lower body, and maintain a healthy heart

The biggest downside of buying an elliptical for a home gym is the space it requires. These machines are notorious for having a large footprint and bulky design, and that’s why NordicTrack specifically made an elliptical that focuses on saving space in addition to delivering a low-impact, high-quality workout.

The name “NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i” says it all; this elliptical has space-saving features so that you can maximize your living area. To find out if it’s the right piece of equipment for you, check out our NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i reviews on assembly, performance, pros and cons, cost, and more.

Even with NordicTrack’s sterling reputation in the fitness industry, the SE7i isn’t perfect. If you’ve got the money to spend, there’s not much to complain about, but there are a few things that could be improved, like:

The Good

  • Assembly is fast and easy
  • Foldable frame that significantly reduces the machine’s footprint
  • iFit-enabled for interactive training
  • 22 levels of adjustable magnetic resistance
  • Rear-driven design that’s easy on the back and knees

The Bad

  • 18” stride length may not be comfortable for taller individuals with a long stride
  • No wireless heart rate monitoring
  • Expensive elliptical machine

Unique Features Of The NordicTrack SE7i Elliptical Machine

The NordicTrack brand uses quality commercial-grade components, even for machines that are specifically meant for residential use. The SE7i isn’t just durable (even compared to commercial gym standards) - it’s also fun to use thanks to the iFit interactive training platform.

Here’s what you can expect in terms of the SE7i’s unique features and functions:

Folding SpaceSaver Design

The SE7i can be folded in a few simple steps thanks to the model’s SpaceSaver design. It features compact vertical storage and rear-mounted transport wheels so that you can easily tuck your machine away when it’s not in use, allowing you to maximize your living space as well as your fitness routine.

22 Digital Resistance Levels With SMR Technology

The 22 digital resistance levels of the SE7i can be easily adjusted with the push of a button, or you can have your resistance on auto-setting to match up with your iFit trainer’s settings and mirror their workout.

NordicTrack uses its own signature Silent Magnetic Resistance (SMR) technology, which means your workout will not only be smooth, but also virtually silent.

5” Backlit Display

This elliptical makes it easy to track workout stats and metrics with the 5” backlit display.

While the display is basic compared to higher-end NordicTrack models, you can access more advanced tracking capabilities by downloading the iFit app to your phone or tablet and securing your device in the machine’s media holder.

CoolAire Workout Fan

Not many elliptical trainers come with a built-in fan, but this one does. The CoolAire workout fan features multiple speed settings to help you stay cool and motivated as you work out in the comfort of your home. The settings can easily be adjusted using the buttons on the console.

30-Day iFit Membership Included

Most NordicTrack equipment purchases come with a free trial to the iFit training platform, including the SE7i. In your 30-day free membership, you’ll have access to everything a paying member would, including on-demand and live studio classes led by elite trainers around the world.

Adjustable Power Ramp & Pedal Positions

Using the console, SE7i users can adjust the machine’s incline at the touch of a button. Many machines require you to change the resistance manually, so this is a great feature to have if you don't want the added hassle of pausing your workout to make incline changes.

Another useful feature is the ability to adjust your pedal position. Each pedal comes with a handle to adjust the position to cater to your comfort needs and stride length. All you have to do is pull the pedal handle outwards, move it to your desired position, and release the handle into the adjustment hole that’s located beneath the pedal.

From this list of the unique features above, it’s clear right away that this elliptical is worth considering, so let’s find out if the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i lives up to the NordicTrack name.

Packaging & Assembly

The SE7i comes in one very large box, which contains all of the parts, tools, and instructions you’ll need for putting it together. Many of the parts are already pre-assembled, so the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i assembly can be done in about 15 minutes with two people. Considering many ellipticals take over an hour to put together, this is a breath of fresh air.

I won’t go through all the assembly steps here (more on that later); all you need to know is that the elliptical is easy to put together, and the manual only lists 6 steps for assembly. Once again, this is a pleasant surprise since many ellipticals have 20+ steps for assembly.

You’ll definitely want to register your elliptical on the NordicTrack website since this is necessary for activating your warranty. Registration only takes a few minutes online, or it can be done over the phone by calling NordicTrack customer service

Design & Durability

The frame of the SE7i is made from alloy steel, which is heavy, but more importantly, durable. When assembled, the machine weighs nearly 200 pounds, so moving it will definitely require two people.

Even though “SpaceSaver” is included in the product’s name, you should know that this is actually a very large machine; the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i dimensions are a whopping 80” long by 67” high. The term “SpaceSaver” refers only to the machine’s folding feature.

While there are many foldable ellipticals on the market, very few of them have the same durability and high-quality construction as this one. For that reason, I'd recommend the SE7i for anyone who wants a foldable elliptical that compares to ellipticals you’d find in a commercial gym setting in terms of construction.

I was a bit worried that the folding system would be difficult to use, but those fears were put to rest right away. Folding the SE7i is extremely easy; just fold the arms and the console down to the base frame, lift the machine to its vertical position, and use the transport wheels to roll it away.

Another unique thing about the SE7i is the location of the flywheel. The 18-pound flywheel design isn’t much to rave about (many machines have drive systems that are 20+ pounds), but the location at the rear of the elliptical rather than the front is a nice feature for reducing strain on the body, primarily the back and knees. Check out our article where we answer is the elliptical good for bad knees.

Workout Features & Using The Console

The SE7i is built with a 5” backlit display for measuring workout stats and making changes to the resistance and incline levels. To be honest, this display isn’t anything fancy, but it still does the job nicely. It comes with 24 built-in workouts to choose from, and the ability to adjust between 22 levels of resistance makes it easy to find your perfect intensity.

If you’re looking for a more advanced console, I’d recommend subscribing to iFit and attaching your tablet to the SE7i’s media holder. You can access the app on your device, choose from thousands of iFit workouts, and stream them while using the elliptical. You’ll even have access to other types of workouts, like Yoga, Pilates, and strength training.

The iFit platform isn’t free, but you will get a 30-day free trial with your purchase to see if it’s worth the investment.

Weight & Height Limitations

The SE7i has a 325-pound weight capacity, which is much higher than the average weight limit of other foldable ellipticals. In fact, this is a higher weight limit than many non-foldable ellipticals, which says a lot about the SE7i’s construction and durability.

While I have very little to complain about on weight limitations, I do have a few things to say about this elliptical’s height limitations. The pedal stride length is only 18”, which really only caters to short and medium-height individuals. I find the SE7i to be comfortable for my personal stride, but if you’re taller than 6’, you’ll probably find an elliptical with a 20” stride to be more suitable.

Price & Warranty

The list price on NordicTrack's website for the SE7i is just under $1300. They also offer financing plans to make a monthly payment until your machine is paid off, which is an excellent option if you're not willing to pay over $1000 upfront.

Even though this can’t be called a “budget-friendly” elliptical, the value for money is undeniably high. It’s rare to find an elliptical machine with such sturdy construction and features at this price point, so if you’re willing to pay, I’d say it’s worth the money, especially with the 10-year frame warranty that’s included.

There are technically no ongoing costs required with the SE7i, but if you do want to continue using iFit after your free trial is up, you’ll have to make a monthly payment. The family plan is $39/month, so factor that into your SE7i costs if you want access to a fitness streaming platform.

NordicTrack SE7i Assembly Instructions

NordicTrack has always done a fantastic job of providing clear and straightforward assembly instructions with each of their machines. The NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i elliptical manual tells you everything you need to know about putting your SE7i together, so before you start, make sure you have your manual open to the assembly page.

Start by visiting the NordicTrack website ( to register your machine and activate your warranty. When unpacking the box, clear out a large space to layout each component, and make sure to have someone help you with the heavier parts of the elliptical frame.

Once your machine is registered and unpacked, here’s what you need to do to get it up and running:

  1. 1
Attach the rear stabilizer to the frame with the included hardware. The frame needs to be slightly raised off the floor for this, so you can use packing inserts beneath the rear of the frame.
  2. 2
With the front of the frame raised slightly off the floor using the included packing inserts, attach the front stabilizer to the frame using the included hardware.
  3. 3
From here, you can raise the upright part of the frame to its vertical position. Once it’s in position, secure it in place by tightening the upright knob.
  4. 4
Next, attach each elliptical arm to its corresponding side using the included hardware and ensure that all the parts are properly aligned.

People Also Ask (FAQs)

How long does it take to put together a NordicTrack elliptical?

Most ellipticals from NordicTrack can be assembled in 60 to 90 minutes, but because most of the elliptical comes pre-assembled, you should be able to assemble the SE7i in 30 minutes or less.

The assembly process is easy thanks to the brand’s helpful manuals and video tutorials, but you’ll definitely want to avoid putting your SE7i together alone since some of the parts are heavy and bulky.

Can you use the SpaceSaver SE7i without iFit?

Yes, you’re able to use the SE7i without an iFit subscription (although you won’t have access to iFit workouts or features). To activate your elliptical without enrolling in iFit, just hold down the Bluetooth button for 15-20 seconds, and you'll have access to the machine’s basic controls, like adjusting resistance and tracking calories.

How do you fold up a NordicTrack SpaceSaver elliptical?

NordicTrack details the exact steps for how to fold your SpaceSaver SE7i in the user manual. You’ll start by loosening the upright knob beneath the pedal arms. Pull it back until the latch stops, and then release the knob. This will allow you to lift the latch and lower the SE7i into a folded position.

What is the stride length on the NordicTrack SE7i?

The NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i stride length is 18". While this is suitable for most people, it's not ideal for everyone. If you're on the tall side, you might be better off going with an elliptical that has a 20" stride length instead, like the SOLE E95.

Where can I find the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i for sale?

You can purchase your SE7i elliptical directly from the NordicTrack website or from a third-party retailer like Amazon or Walmart. NordicTrack has its own Amazon storefront featuring all of the brand’s fitness equipment, so this is a great option for fast shipping and low prices.

While the price tag of the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE7i doesn’t fit everyone’s budget, this machine uses an impressive combination of commercial-grade materials and space-saving design features.

Most commercial-level machines are too bulky and heavy to even think about moving around the home or into storage, but thanks to NordicTrack’s simple folding feature, that’s not the case with this one.
