NordicTrack is quite possibly the most well-known name in the fitness industry, and the brand's elliptical machines are second to none. NordicTrack does a fantastic job of combining commercial-quality construction with convenient features like foldability and Bluetooth technology, and the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE9i elliptical is the perfect example of that.
Just about all NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE9i reviews say that this machine is worth every penny, but I’m here to find out for myself. In this complete review, I’ve considered all of the features and functions that are important to consider when buying an elliptical, like assembly, workout performance, and value for money. Unique Features Of The NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE9i Elliptical
The biggest selling point of the SE9i is the foldable design that makes this elliptical a powerful space-saving option. But that’s not the only reason that people are adding the SE9i to their home gyms - here are a few more:
24 Levels Of Resistance
The 24 digital resistance levels of the SE9i can be easily adjusted with the push of a button, or you can have your resistance on auto-setting to match up with your iFit trainer’s settings and mirror their workout.
NordicTrack uses its own signature Silent Magnetic Resistance (SMR) technology, which means your workout will not only be smooth but also virtually silent, so your workouts won’t disturb anyone in your household.
This is especially beneficial for apartments where you might have your workout equipment on a second floor. I had no complaints from anyone at home, even during early morning workouts.
18-Lb Inertia-Enhanced Flywheel
This rear-driven elliptical holds its 18-pound inertia-enhanced flywheel at the back of the elliptical. Compared to front-drive ellipticals, this design helps minimize strain on the back and knees, making it an excellent choice for seniors or anyone with joint issues.

The SE9i can be folded in a few simple steps thanks to the model’s SpaceSaver design. It features compact vertical storage and rear-mounted transport wheels so that you can easily tuck your machine away when it’s not in use, allowing you to maximize your living space as well as your fitness routine.

Wireless iFit Bluetooth Chest Strap & Built-In Heart Rate Sensors
The SE9i makes it possible to monitor heart rate using two different systems. You can either pair your wireless iFit chest strap with the machine’s Bluetooth or use the built-in heart rate sensors that are located on the fixed handlebars.
Adjustable Oversized Pedals
With the SE9i, each pedal comes with a handle to adjust the position to cater to your comfort needs and stride length. All you have to do is pull the pedal handle outwards, move it to your desired position, and release the handle into the adjustment hole that’s located beneath the pedal.
Sometimes improper placement of foot pedals can cause discomfort and other ailments while exercising. We discuss this further in our article on why your feet go numb on the elliptical.
7" Smart HD Touchscreen & 30 Workout Apps
While many elliptical machines have basic LCD systems for tracking progress and changing settings, the SE9i goes above and beyond with a 7" smart high-definition touchscreen.
You can access 30 different workout apps using this touchscreen or keep it simple by selecting a manual mode or QuickStart.
If you prefer to stream your workouts from a larger device, the SE9i comes with a large media rack for securing a tablet.
You’ll be able to access more advanced tracking capabilities by downloading the iFit app to your phone or tablet and placing the device in the machine’s media holder.
Auto Breeze Workout Fan
At the center of the SE9i’s console, you’ll find a large built-in fan. This workout fan features multiple speed settings to help you stay cool and motivated as you work out in the comfort of your home. The settings can easily be adjusted using the buttons on the console.
Integrated Quick Touch Handle Controls
Most ellipticals require users to let go of the moving handles in order to change resistance and incline settings on the console, but not this one. The SE9i comes with integrated quick touch handle controls on each of the moving handlebars so that you can make adjustments without having to release them.

Maximum Weight Capacity
Frame: 10 years
I recently had the pleasure of using the Nordictrack SpaceSaver SE9i, so I was able to put the machine’s unique features to the test and see what this elliptical can really do. From the moment I stepped onto the pedals, I could tell that NordicTrack put a lot of thought into the SE9i’s design.
Packaging & Assembly
The SE9i arrives in one very large box that contains all of the parts, tools, and instructions you’ll need for putting it together. Many of the parts are already pre-assembled, so the NordicTrack SE9i assembly can be done in about 15 to 30 minutes with two people. Considering many ellipticals take over an hour to put together, this is a very fast assembly process.
I won’t go through all the assembly steps here; all you need to know is that the elliptical is easy to put together, and the manual only lists 6 steps for assembling it. While it’s possible to get it done with one person, the assembled weight of the machine is nearly 200 pounds, so as you can imagine, some of the parts are quite heavy.
Before you even start assembling, you’ll definitely want to register your elliptical on the NordicTrack website since this is necessary for activating your warranty. Registration only takes a few minutes online, or it can be done over the phone by calling NordicTrack customer service.
Design & Workout Features
The frame of the SE9i is made from alloy steel, which is heavy, but on the plus side, it’s very durable. Even though “SpaceSaver” is included in the product’s name, you should know that this is actually a very large machine; the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE9i dimensions are a whopping 80” long by 67” high. For that reason, I’d say that the term “SpaceSaver” refers only to the machine’s folding feature.
While there are many foldable ellipticals on the market, very few of them have the same durability and high-quality construction like this one.
Most are made with lightweight materials and designed to have a compact footprint, but that's not the case for the SE9i.
After using it, I can wholeheartedly say that this machine is ideal for anyone who wants a foldable elliptical that compares to ellipticals you’d find in a commercial gym environment in terms of construction.
I was a bit worried that the folding system would be difficult to use or that the folding process would be time-consuming, but those fears were put to rest right away. Folding the SE9i is extremely easy; just fold the arms and the console down to the base frame, lift the machine to its vertical position, and use the transport wheels to roll it away.
Another unique thing about the SE9i is the location of the flywheel. The 18-pound flywheel design isn’t much to rave about (many machines have drive systems that are 20 or even 30+ pounds), but the location at the rear of the elliptical rather than the front is a nice feature for reducing strain on the body, primarily the back and knees.

Using The Console
When I heard that the SE9i had a 7” display, I assumed that it would feel small and underwhelming. It was actually just the opposite; 7” isn’t huge by any means, but the touchscreen is plenty large to keep track of fitness stats and stream on-demand workouts.
With the console, you can set goals and track metrics easily, and I love the addition of the large media holder that’s located directly above the touchscreen. This lets me use my tablet to access my iFit account while also keeping track of basic workout info on the machine’s display.
I haven’t used many of them, but there are 30 workout apps loaded into the touchscreen, which is far more than the preset workouts you’ll find in the lower-end SE7i model.
Weight & Height Limitations
The SE9i has a 325-pound weight capacity, which is much higher than the average weight limit of other foldable ellipticals. Actually, this is a higher weight limit than many non-foldable ellipticals, which says a lot about the machine’s construction and durability.
While I have very little to complain about on weight limitations, I’m not overly thrilled about the maximum height capacity. The pedal stride length is only 18”, which really only caters to short and medium-height individuals. This is perfectly comfortable for my personal stride, but if you’re taller than 6’, you’ll probably find an elliptical with a 20” stride to be more suitable.
Price, Ongoing Costs & Maintenance
The list price on NordicTrack’s website for the SE9i is just under $1700. They also offer financing plans to make a monthly payment until your machine is paid off, which is a great option if you’re not willing to pay over $1500 upfront.
This doesn’t fall in the “budget-friendly” price range, but the value for money is undeniably high, especially considering the 10-year frame warranty that’s included. In addition to 10 years on the frame, you’ll also get 2 years of coverage on SE9i parts and 1 year on labor.
There are technically no ongoing costs required with the SE9i if you don’t want there to be, but if you do want to continue using iFit after your 30-day free trial is up, you’ll have to make a monthly payment. The family plan is $39/month, so factor that into your SE9i costs if you want access to a fitness streaming platform.
Pros & Cons Of The Nordictrack SE9i Elliptical
Even with NordicTrack’s sterling reputation in the fitness industry, the SE9i isn’t perfect. If you’re looking for a commercial-quality foldable machine, there’s not much to complain about, but there are a few things that could be improved, like:

Taking Care Of Your Nordictrack SE9i (Maintenance Instructions)
The SE9i doesn’t require much maintenance, but NordicTrack does have a few recommendations for taking care of your elliptical. According to a company blog post, there are a lot of benefits of maintaining your machine, like the fact that “you’ll be more motivated to use it regularly, and you can extend its life, thus guaranteeing an optimal workout every time… for a long time.”
It’s a good idea to perform regular gentle cleanings for your SE9i to prevent dust and sweat from settling on the machine’s frame and within its components. You can use a vacuum or soft cloth to clean off dust, and this is recommended 1x per week. For sweat, it’s best to wipe down your machine with a damp cloth or disinfectant wipe after each workout.
It’s also recommended that you perform thorough maintenance checks every 3 to 6 months. This involves lubricating the elliptical belt and tightening any nuts/screws that have loosened with frequent use. You can find all the necessary maintenance steps in your NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE9i manual.
People Also Ask (FAQs)
Does the SE9i have Bluetooth?
Yes, the SE9i has a few Bluetooth capabilities, like pairing with audio devices, the iFit app, and wireless heart rate monitoring devices.
Can you use the SpaceSaver SE9i without iFit?
Yes, it’s possible to use this elliptical’s built-in workout programs instead of streaming content from iFit. I definitely recommend using your 30-day iFit free trial to see if it’s for you, but if you decide that it’s not, you can certainly use your SE9i without it.
Is the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE9i foldable?
Yep! This machine’s foldability is actually one of its best features. The top of the frame folds flat onto the bottom half of the frame, and there are transport wheels so that you can move the machine to storage and position it vertically against a wall.
Where can I find the NordicTrack SE9i for sale?
You can either purchase your SE9i elliptical directly from the NordicTrack website or from a third-party retailer like Amazon or Walmart. NordicTrack has its own Amazon storefront featuring all of the brand’s fitness equipment, so this is a great option for fast shipping and low prices.
The final word on the NordicTrack SE9i is that it’s a top-notch piece of cardio equipment that comes with a lot of features that justify the high price tag. While it’s not ideal for budget-weary home gymers, it’s an excellent choice if you’re looking for a folding elliptical with lots of workout functions and impressive durability.
