What Is Mr. Hyde Pre-Workout? (ProSupps Overview)
Is Mr. Hyde Pre-workout good? It's Amazon's Choice, people's favorite, and one of Pro Supps' most popular products, so… It must be. Right?
Let's not jump the gun just yet.
Pro Supps Mr. Hyde is a pre-workout supplement designed to help you with the following:
Judging by the "Xtreme" in the full naming scheme, you'd think this pre-workout will have you buzzing like a hummingbird on Red Bull and chugging out reps like there's no tomorrow.
However, I'm kind of sorry to tell you that's not entirely the case...
My Review After Taking Mr. Hyde’s Xtreme Pre-Workout
So, to fully understand where I'm coming from and why I'm not completely impressed with pre-workout powders like this one, we will have to do an in-depth Mr. Hyde Pre-Workout review, starting with real-world performance and effects.
It's always sad when the strongest feature of pre-workout supplements is their flavor, but then again, at least you have something.
I tried the Blue Razz Blitz pre-workout because it was on sale and I love berries. I did not regret it. Good stuff!

I've read that folks gush about the Cotton Candy flavor, Blue Razz, Popsicle one, and Watermelon Rush, but I didn't try any of those, so I can't really say.
Also, it mixes well, both in warm and cold water, which is a big deal for many.
2. Performance Increase
When it comes to workout performance boosts, I generally think they were fine. You certainly won't hit your peak performance or experience super-enhanced energy levels.
Still, at the same time, you'll be ingesting around 400 mg of caffeine, and if that doesn't get your energy up a bit, nothing will.
Muscle pumps are pretty minor with this one compared to many other pre-workouts.
How and why? Well, the L-Citrulline is criminally underdosed, so if you're in it for the pumps and mirror selfies - Mr. Hyde Pre-Workout powder will certainly not help.
Since this one is by no means a stim-free pre-workout, you will certainly experience noticeable focus-enhancing effects.
As with the energy, it's pretty much all coming from the caffeine, but choline helps, too.
That said, if you're particularly sensitive to stimulants, this could easily go the other way if you get all jittery and anxious.
When you ingest nearly half a gram of caffeine in one go, you can't help but feel awake - maybe even sharp.
Now, what I did notice is that the energy levels remain stable for a few hours. However, that's expected, considering caffeine's half-life.
6. Side Effects
I'm usually not the one to experience any side effects as I'm pretty numb to stimulants after years of use, but that doesn't mean I don't feel them.
In this case, however, I did have one - an upset stomach.
Not exactly sure why (although I'm blaming caffeine), but my stomach felt uneasy. And, after some research, I've discovered I'm not the only one.
Many have experienced nausea, heartburn, jitters, tingling, and so on.
I'd say start with a half scoop to warm up and work your way up to build a tolerance to stims, but almost all of the ingredients in this pre-workout formula are underdosed, so you wouldn't be doing yourself a favor if you stick with the half dose in the long run.
This one felt pretty much like every other pre-workout I've taken. So, a steady decline, no major crashes, etc.
Now, here's where it gets interesting.
With such high levels of caffeine, even though there are no other stimulants, timing is key. If you take it too late, your cortisol will go through the roof, and you won't be able to go to sleep.
Alternatively, if you take it too early, like right after you get up (and on an empty stomach), and you want to hit the gym first thing in the morning, you'll actually do the opposite.
You'll flush your brain with caffeine when its cortisol (a hormone responsible for keeping you alert) levels are at peak.
In other words, you'll overload your brain with stimuli, and it won't be able to properly handle the cortisol-adenosine interactions, which will most likely result in a crash right around lunchtime.
Now, you will get a nice nap out of it, but still, if you need to be productive in the afternoon - you might want to steer clear of this formula for at least two hours after waking up.

8. Cost & Availability
This one's readily available at Amazon and GNC website, and depending on the flavor and sales going on, you can get these anywhere from (approx.) $28 to $40, making the price per scoop vary from $0.94 to $1.33. This is about average for pre-workouts.
Mr. Hyde Pre-Workout Ingredients (What’s In It?)
Now it's time for us to get into the technical, science-based, no-BS part of the Mr. Hyde Pre-Workout review.
So, let's break down their Strength Matrix, Intensity Matrix, and Caffeine Matrix "blends," shall we?
Caffeine Anhydrous - 300 Mg
As one of the most popular nootropic stimulants, caffeine anhydrous is the main and most hard-hitting stimulant in this pre-workout supplement.
Known for its performance-enhancing and endurance-boosting abilities, caffeine will certainly help you power through your workout and get the most out of it.
But, at 300mg per scoop, I must warn you that you're kind of pushing it. And this is only one portion of the Caffeine Matrix blend, so it's not even the total about of caffeine.
A 200-pound man should cap out at around 550 mg per day, and you're taking nearly 75% of your daily recommended dose here.
Smaller adults should max out at 400 mg per day.
Di-Caffeine Malate – 70 mg
Here we have 70 mg of Di-Caffeine Malate, a mixture of caffeine anhydrous and malic acid, probably at a ratio of 3:1.
This softens the caffeine blow to your digestive tract and prevents nausea, cramps, etc. At least, it should do that.
However, as I've mentioned earlier - many have reported upset stomachs. Therefore, these 18 or so milligrams of malic acid won't do a lot.
Caffeine Citric Acid Blend - 50mg
This compound (caffeine anhydrous, citric acid monohydrate, and sodium citrate dihydrate) is primarily used to treat apnea episodes in premature infants and has lately gained popularity in the fitness industry for it is faster acting than regular caffeine.
However, at this dose and with this much caffeine in the formula, it's nothing but a marketing gimmick.
Beta-Alanine - 2.5g
While beta-alanine is an essential amino acid proven to improve muscular endurance and boost athletic performance, at 2.5g, you don't get enough of it to actually make any significant performance difference despite it being the essence of the "Strength Matrix."
Research suggests you need 3.2 to 6.4 g of beta-alanine daily, or a total of 179 g over the course of 28 days, to actually experience the benefits.
Seeing how you're not taking your pre-workouts every day, but rather 3 to 5 times a week, you aren't really reaping all the benefits you should.
And, even if this did contain enough beta-alanine to make a difference, research has proven this compound is only effective for exercises in the one to four-minute range, which rarely happens in the gym.
Arginine Silicate Inositol - 500 mg
ASI, or Inositol-stabilized arginine silicate, is an ergogenic aid that should elevate arginine blood levels and also increase your nitric oxide levels.
In theory, this should result in greater pumps in the gym mirror.
And, while there is a study concluding increased hyperemia and raised energy levels, the administered dose was 1,500 mg, so it's debatable how potent ASI in this formula is.
Creatine HCL - 250 mg
Not only is creatine hydrochloride a partially inferior, more expensive, and less researched form of creatine monohydrate, but here, it is also heavily underdosed (recommended dose is 1500 mg at 100 lbs body weight).
Also, creatine, monohydrate or other, has no immediate performance benefits; therefore, it is pretty much worthless as a pre-workout ingredient.
Choline Bitartrate - 500 mg
Choline Bitartrate is a molecule found in pre-workouts due to its cognitive boosting properties.
Essentially, it helps you keep your focus so you can bang out your workout without being distracted by other gym-goers or music.
At 500 mg, you're getting an effective dose even at one scoop.
L-Citrulline Aspartate - 500mg
L-Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid that is pretty much one of the most high-quality ingredients you can find in a pre-workout supplement aside from caffeine.
It increases the overall exercise performance and muscle endurance, helps with recovery, and results in a solid pump.
Now, in this case, it is mixed with an anionic form of aspartic acid that helps with protein biosynthesis.
This process involves a ton of reactions and conversions, ultimately leading to elevated levels of arginine and nitric oxide, leading to greater vasodilation and boosted nutrient delivery to your muscles.
However, here's the catch - you need at least 3000 mg of L-citrulline. So, all of that sweet stuff about performance and endurance? Not the best.
N-Acetyl Tyrosine - 50mg
N-Acetyl Tyrosine, or NALT, is a more soluble form of L-Tyrosine, an amino acid used as a precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine.
So, a feel-good ingredient used to help reduce stress and help with memory and mental clarity.
However, considering many recommend taking anywhere between 500 and 2000 mg in a single dose, at 50 mg, this ingredient is not even worth mentioning.
L-Theanine - 50mg
Here we have another amino acid used as a stress and caffeine-jitter reliever in pre-workout supplements.
L-Theanine is naturally found in green tea leaves, and it can cross the blood-brain barrier. And unlike other ingredients in this formula, this one's been proven effective at 50 mg doses.
Theacrine - 25mg
Theacrine is a purine alkaloid known to affect our bodies in the same way as caffeine (interacting with adenosine etc.)
It is also alleged to have anti-inflammatory effects, but research on all of this is very inconclusive and even more scarce.
When you factor in a 25 mg dose into play, it is improbable that this will affect your performance.
GABA - 25mg
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a naturally occurring anti-anxiety neurotransmitter found in our bodies.
However, GABA, found in the Intensity Matrix of Mr. Hyde pre-workout supplement, does not cross the blood-brain barrier when taken orally, so once again - no effect whatsoever.
Yohimbe Bark Extract - 3mg
Anecdotally known as an aphrodisiac for its ability to increase blood flow to your little general, Yohimbe Bark extract is sometimes used as an aid in sports nutrition products like pre-workouts.
However, there is no evidence supporting this claim - especially not at this dose.
Who Should Take Mr. Hyde Xtreme Pre-Workout?
So, who are Mr. Hyde Pre-Workout supplements for? Well, it's kind of hard to recommend this product because it has some obvious drawbacks.
It's one of those dietary supplements that are potent, but at the end of the day - they lack substance.
Without sounding too harsh, Mr. Hyde Pre-Workout is just an overpriced can of caffeine.
Who Should Avoid ProSupps Xtreme Pre-Workout?
On the other hand, those who should definitely not consume Mr. Hyde Pre-Workout are “those who have a family history of heart disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, psychiatric conditions, or seizure disorder."
Thankfully, this one does not contain any banned substances, so professional fitness fanatics should feel free to experiment, although they hardly have any benefit from it.
How Is Mr. Hyde Different From Competing Pre-Workouts?
ProSupps Mr. Hyde Vs C4 Pre-Workout
I'll never realize why the Original C4 is of the most popular pre-workout formulas. It's just bad. In fact, Mr. Hyde Pre-Workout is like a steroid compared to how this one in every way.
It's better dosed, gives more energy, and can help you push through the workout, even though it is "just" because of the immense caffeine dose.
ProSupps Mr. Hyde Vs Redcon1 Total War Pre-Workout
Redcon1 Total War Pre-Workout puts Mr. Hyde to shame. It's a well-balanced formula where it matters to most, providing you with 6 grams of L-Citrulline and about 320 mg of caffeine, along with some taurine to help you get to work.
While some other ingredients may be here and there, if you’re genuinely looking for an energy-boosting formula to pair with your other supplements and balanced diet - this is the one.
