The Schwinn A40 elliptical machine is one of the most popular on the market for an array of reasons. Ellipticals are the top option for many out there due to how well they tone the body, improve cardiovascular health, and much more. Not only that, but it's preferable to a bike or treadmill for many because of how easy it is on the joints.
Schwinn is a reputable brand that’s been around for decades, providing users with a reliable experience every time. While many Schwinn A40 elliptical reviews just list specs, we are diving deep into what it’s like to use this machine and why it may be the one for your home gym.

Unique Features Of The Schwinn A40 Elliptical
The A40 is simply one of those “best bang for your buck” home gym additions. It’s easy to use, not intimidating for beginners, yet good enough for seasoned athletes.
Precision Path Foot Motion Technology
Unlike a treadmill, on an elliptical, your feet are not exactly “free” to move around and are instead on footplates. The articulating footplates on these models are nice as they enable your feet and joints to move naturally.
High Speed, High Inertia Perimeter
One of the easiest and quickest ways to tell if an elliptical machine is high-quality is to check the weight of its flywheel. The heavy, high inertia, perimeter weighted flywheel is just the ticket to smooth and consistent motion.
8 Levels of Resistance
With 8 levels of resistance, this makes the machine easy enough to use for beginners while remaining challenging enough for more advanced or experienced elliptical users.
7 Preset Workout Programs
Consisting of 6 profiles and 1 manual workout program, these preset workout programs are handy for many kinds of users. If you're a beginner and don't have a routine yet, it's a great option.
On the other hand, if you're simply the type of person who likes to select a routine and not worry about messing with settings in the middle of your workout, these programs are also nice.
Flexible Handlebar Design
With both mobile and fixed handlebars, your workouts will be that much more flexible. Fixed handlebars are great for keeping balance and tracking your heart rate, as sensors are built into them. The moving handlebars allow you to engage your upper body for a complete, full-body workout while on the elliptical.

Heart Rate Monitoring
The heart rate monitoring system on the A40 Elliptical is very efficient and accurate. Located in the fixed handlebars, you don’t have to go out of your way to measure your pulse or deal with purchasing any 3rd-party accessories.

Schwinn A40 Specifications
59 x 23 x 64 inches
Maximum Weight Capacity
Yes, 3 years frame, 1 year for mechanical parts and electronics, and 60 days for labor
When we first opened up the A40, we immediately started putting it together. With any machine as large as an elliptical, it’s much easier if you have someone to help you. The box does include a user-friendly, fully-illustrated instruction manual and all necessary tools to assemble your Schwinn A40.
Plan on it taking around an hour to put together with two people. High-quality synthetic grease is a must-have and will extend the life of your machine. For further information, review our article on how to lubricate an elliptical.
Once you step on the sleek machine and get pedaling, you’ll realize how smooth it is. This is thanks to the high-inertia flywheel, which offers a consistent motion. We’ve used some ellipticals of similar price that were awkward due to the pedals catching or stuttering, so this was a significant improvement. Combine that with the option of using either the moving or stationary handles, and it's made for versatile workouts.
The footplates are quite large, which makes it easy for anyone of any foot size to use. However, for many users, they'll have to continuously adjust sliding feet every few minutes or so. Also, the footplates are not padded or come with a kind of toe cage, which is pretty typical for ellipticals of this price range.
With 8 levels of resistance and 7 preset workout programs included, the Schwinn A40 elliptical machine is ideal for your average person who just wants to get in a quality workout. The A40 manages to balance quality without becoming overwhelming with options and settings.
Tying into this is the basic console. More complex is not always better when it comes to exercise machines, especially if you aren't already used to using them. This one is straightforward and incredibly simple to use, and you'll get it up and running without having to read the user's manual (though it is not a bad idea).
As you pedal, it'll track your speed, time, calories burned, distance traveled, resistance level, RPM, heart rate, and more. Moreover, you can connect the vast majority of music players (smartphones, tablets, iPods, etc.) to it!
As we've mentioned before, this is a great deal considering the price. We'd place it between a budget and mid-range model, so if you don't want to invest a lot of money in an elliptical machine, it's the perfect option. With a warranty of 3 years on the frame, 1 year mechanical and electrical, and 60 days for labor, it's not bad.
Pros & Cons Of The Schwinn A40 Elliptical
No one exercise machine will be best for every single kind of user, including the Schwinn A40 Elliptical. First off, elliptical machines are great for those who find treadmills to be too hard on the joints and prefer a smoother experience.

This model in particular is ideal if you're just starting out or aren’t planning on performing super intense/HIIT workouts.
While the design is straightforward and "no-frills," it is still very well-built, coming with quality components and 8 resistance levels. Keep in mind that the stride length is not adjustable, though there are moving and stationary handlebars.

Disassembling The Schwinn A40
First, make sure that you have another person who can help you. Make sure the elliptical is powered off, disconnected from the power adapter, and the batteries are removed from the console.
Next, you can start by removing the water bottle holder and the console from the frame assembly with one of the included keys. Next, you'll want to remove the pedals from the legs, one by one. After the pedals are removed, remove the legs from the frame assembly. These are attached with quite a few washers and screws, so make sure to have tape or a container handy to hold them all.
After this, you’ll be able to remove the pedal arms from the frame assembly. After the pedal arms are removed, you can start on the lower handlebar arms. After this, it’s a breeze! The console mast shouldn’t have any arms attached to it, so remove it from the frame assembly as well. Take special care not to crimp the console cable which should be sitting inside.
Next up, take the rail assembly and front stabilizer and start removing them as well. Make sure to keep track of where all the pieces go so that you can put the elliptical back together when you're ready.
