When it comes to working out from home, there’s no better way to increase your fitness than to work out on a rowing machine. Rowing machines are often under-rated and are excellent at burning calories, shredding fat, and overall heart health.

Another benefit of using a rowing machine is that it’s a relatively low impact form of cardio that doesn’t create a significant impact on your joints.

The ProForm 550R rower has long been held as one of the best rowing machines around, and in this article, I’ll be discussing everything you need to know about buying this piece of equipment for your home gym.

If you’ve been looking for a rowing machine that not only provides you with a great workout but can be stored away quickly so that you’re home gym doesn’t look cluttered, the ProForm 550R rower has your back.

The ProForm 550R rowing machine has been carefully designed with your comfort at the forefront of Proform’s mind. Its ergonomic design ensures maximum comfort while you work out, and while you’re not working it, it looks brilliant folded away.

Overall, the ProForm 550R is best suited for a beginner-intermediate level exerciser looking for a rowing machine that can fold away to save space.

The Good

  • Folds up into a compact shape
  • Handle grips are incredibly comfortable
  • Extremely quiet to use
  • Made from excellent materials
  • Super easy to assemble

The Bad

  • Resistance might be too easy for advanced users
  • Doesn’t provide all the metrics advanced users might need
  • No heart rate monitor was provided

Unique Features Of The ProForm 550R Rower

The ProForm 550R is an excellent rowing machine for many reasons; whether it’s the silent resistance or the space-saving design, there are many reasons why you should invest in this superb machine. Here are some of the best features:

Large LCD Window

Having a large and clear display on a rowing machine is a must-have feature, in my opinion. The ProForm 550R LCD allows you to track your exercise data during your workout in an extremely clear manner.

The data provided on the screen covers all of the usual information such as distance, calories burned, strokes per minute, and time.

The screen is pretty simple compared to similar products that provide smart screen tablets, but this model by ProForm keeps it simple and does that job perfectly.

Soft Touch Ergonomic Handle

While using the ProForm 550R rowing machine, I found that the handles were extremely comfortable to hold, and I didn’t feel the need to constantly change my grip every 5 minutes while rowing.

It's comfortable soft-touch handle will undoubtedly be a feature you’ll love, and it will help you row for longer, preventing any blistering that usually occurs with rowers.

Inertia Enhanced Flywheel

The ProForm 550R rowing machine sports an Inertia Enhanced Flywheel that can be adjusted easily using a lever on the top of the flywheel housing.

The lever controls how much air can enter the flywheel housing and simulates the effect of rowing a heavier or lighter boat (depending on whether you increase or decrease the amount of air). Think of it as increasing the gear on a bike, except you’re on a rowing machine.

Silent Magnetic Resistance (SMR)

The Silent Magnetic Resistance (SMR) of the ProForm 550R rowing machine allows you to row in a smooth and frictionless manner. By using magnets to control the resistance, you can increase the resistance of the rowing machine without raising the sound that it produces. When comparing this magnetic machine to air rowers, you'll find magnetic to be much quieter.

This makes the 550R a great rowing machine for your home gym, especially if you don't want to wake your neighbors, or worse, your family.

Pivoting Pedals

The ProForm 550R rowing machine comes with pivoting pedals and oversized foot straps to allow for natural movement during your time using the machine.

This feature will help you avoid injuries that can occur from performing repetitive movements while in a fixed range of motion. I also found that using this rowing machine felt great, and the pivoting pedals contributed to the comfort.

Space Saver Design

Having a rowing machine that can fold up is crucial, especially if you want to put it in your home gym. The fact that the ProForm 550R folds up into a compact shape makes it incredibly easy to store away when you’re not using the rowing machine.

This design aspect makes the ProForm 550R the perfect rowing machine for those of you who’re space conscious.

Built With Steel Body & Oversized Aluminum Seat Rail

Most rowing machines don’t accommodate taller users, meaning that if you’re over 6ft, you’ll struggle to use a rowing machine without rounding your back and never fully extending your legs.

However, the ProForm 550R has an oversized aluminum seat rail that is perfect for taller users. As a result, you'll be able to achieve perfect form with an excellent range of motion. The steel framing of the rowers body is exceptionally sturdy and has been built to last.

Now that we've discussed some of the prominent features of this rower, let's dive into a more detailed review of what it is actually like to use this thing.

Assembly & Maintenance

When it comes to assembling the ProForm 550R rowing machine, it's one of the simplest pieces of home gym equipment you'll ever have to build. Simply unbox the machine, and follow the seven easy steps mentioned in the ProForm 550R manual.

You’ll need one Phillips screwdriver and one adjustable wrench, sometimes I would recommend using power tools, but the manual clearly states not to use them to prevent damaging the rower. One person is needed for the assembly, and it will take roughly 20 minutes to get the rowing machine set up.

To maintain the rowing machine, a damp cloth should be used to clean the machine regularly, and some WD40 for the seat mechanism to ensure a smooth movement. You may also wish to sign up for the PROTECT UTS extended service plan mentioned on page 4 of the ProForm 550R rower manual.

Workouts & Performance

While I was using the ProForm 550R rower, I found that the movement was super smooth, and at times it felt like I was gliding. This has a lot to do with the inertia-enhanced flywheel, providing Silent Magnetic Resistance to help provide some of the smoothest rowing movements I’ve experienced.

However, I would suggest that this ProForm rower is at times a little too easy and would be best suited as a rowing machine for beginner level users. An intermediate user can also use this machine, but it may not pose as much of a challenge as you're looking for.

The 550R rowing machine has an extended seat rail which allows taller users to use the rowing machine with ease. This is by far one of the greatest features, most rowing machines neglect taller users, and it’s great to see ProForm considering this during the design.

Health Benefits

From regularly using the ProForm 550R rowing machine, you can expect to see your cardiovascular fitness increase, giving you improved lung, heart, and body health. Rowing machines have often been linked to having a meditative effect on your body, increasing the levels of “feel good” hormones such as dopamine

As I’ve mentioned earlier in the article, using the ProForm 550R rowing machine will have less impact on the body and its joints, so it’s suitable for those of you who’re unable to use treadmills and other high impact forms of exercise.

Design & Features

At first glance, the ProForm 550R looks rather basic, but that’s ok, as the 550R rower knows this, and it is one of the best looking “basic” rowers I’ve come across. My only peeve with it is that the screen is a bit too basic for my liking, but I’ll talk about that in a moment.

Overall, I like the machines design. The ProForm 550R is for people who just want an effective rower that will get the job done. It’s simple, easy to use, and doesn’t have any extravagant features that you’ll never use. Out of all of the ProForm 550R features, I think the folding mechanism wins it for me.

Using The Console

The LCD screen is of a good size and is extremely clear to see when you’re exercising on the rowing machine.

It shows all of the essential information you’d expect to see on a rowing machine, such as distance, time, calories, strokes per minute, etc.

proform 550r rower monitor and handle

However, even though the ProForm 550R shows the basic information, the screen is itself... basic. It would have been nice to see some additional features added to the screen, such as pre-installed workout programs or even smart functionality so you can link it to your phones or smartwatches.

Many other rowing systems around the same price have much better screens. While the ProForm 550R screen isn’t bad, it could be brought up to date.

Price & Warranty

By looking at the ProForm 550R rowing machine, you’d expect it to be sat at the lower to mid-range on the market and will set you back around $500.

While this isn’t too bad of a price, I feel that the ProForm 550R could use a bit of an update and perhaps introduce some smart features that will allow you to monitor your workouts on your phone. Other rowing machines under the $500 price mark are taking steps to update their offering, and I’ll be surprised if ProForm doesn’t do the same.

When it comes to the ProForm warranty, they offer an excellent five-year frame warranty and 90-day parts and labor warranty (this could be better).

Overall, if you can find the ProForm 550R for the right price, it will make an excellent rowing machine for any home gym. It’s ideally suited for beginners but will give any intermediate user a great workout. It may be a simple rowing machine, but I find that it’s one of the rowers merits.

Comparing The 550R With Other ProForm Rowers

Proform 550R Vs 750R

ProForm 750R Folding Smart Rower with 30-Day...
  • [30-day iFIT trial included] - Follow expert...
  • [Large aluminum seat rail] - Large aluminum...
  • [Auxiliary Input] - Connect your smartphone...
  • [2” built-in speakers] - Enjoy clear audio...

There isn’t really a contest when it comes to the ProForm 550R vs 750R in my eyes. The 750R has all the aesthetics of the 550R but includes an up-to-date screen and a built-in tablet holder, which the 550R lacks. You also get 30 days of iFit included with your purchase, which will take your workouts to another level.

However, if you’re on a budget, the 550R will come out on top as you'll save around $300 compared to the 750R, which is a mid-range rowing machine.

Proform 550R Vs 440R

ProForm 440R Rower
  • Integrated dual action strength training
  • Oversized pivoting pedals with adjustable...
  • Space saver design

Both the 550R and the 440R look the part and perform brilliantly. They can also compact into a small space, making them ideal for smaller home gyms. However, I’ve found that the 440R is missing many of the ergonomic features the 550R has, such as the longer rail, comfortable handle, and pivoting foot holders. This is a shame as these are brilliant features.

But, one thing the 440R does have is the ability to perform basic strength exercises using the handle and cable such as curls, extensions, wood chops, etc. Overall, the 550R is a better rowing machine as its comfier to use and sticks in its lane as a rowing machine.

Comparisons With Other Rowing Machine Brands

  • Space Recommendations: Assembled: 8 ft x 2 ft...

When looking at the ProForm 550R rower vs Concept 2, they're pretty similar machines with their basic bare minimum design. However, the Concept2 allows you to upload your workout data to your smart device, which is something the 550R is lacking.

When it comes to saving space, the 550R wins hands down; it can fold up and take up minimal space, whereas the Concept2 is there to stay and takes up the room whether it’s in use or not. The price of the two machines couldn’t be further apart. There’s a massive $500 difference between them both, with the 550R being the cheaper option.

Proform 550R Vs XTerra Fitness ERG700 Rower

  • Combination of air and magnetic resistance...
  • Padded rowing handle for superior grip, feel...
  • Large contoured seat maximizes comfort and...
  • Large 5.5" bright blue backlit monitor with...

The ERG700 is a slick-looking rower with some great built-in features that the 550R doesn’t, such as their ten preloaded programs and 16 levels of resistance compared to the 550R’s ten levels.

However, even though the ERG700 folds up, I wouldn’t say I liked it. It seems to take up a lot more room than the 550R does, and it looks more of an eyesore once it’s folded up. Overall, I’d go with the 550R; it will look much better in your home gym.

Proform 550R Vs Echelon Smart Rower

Echelon Row Smart Rower
  • Built-in Device Holder to Securely Hold Smart...
  • Ergonomic Design Supports Proper Hip + Spine...
  • Patent-pending Bluetooth Resistance...
  • Foldable Design for Easy Storage

The Echelon Smart Rower is on a whole other level than the 550R; I’m not going to lie. But this is something you’d expect from a $1000 rowing machine. So if you’re on a budget, definitely stick to the ProForm 550R.

However, if you’re looking for something with a bit more wow factor, then the Echelon Smart Rower will do the trick. It’s got built-in tablet holder, comes with a fitness app loaded with classes and plenty of upbeat music. At the end of the day, this one will be down to budget; both are excellent options, just very different price points.

People Also Ask (FAQs)

How do you replace the battery on the ProForm 550R?

You can unscrew the back of the screen console to access the ProForm 550R battery pack. You’ll need 4 AA batteries to use the LCD screen with your rower.

Where can you find ProForm 550R rower parts?

If you require new parts for your ProForm 550R, then you should contact ProForm directly and order the parts directly through them. Or, if you’re product is covered through their extended service protection, you should contact them

Don’t be tempted to buy replica parts hoping that they will work; this can be dangerous, and the last thing you want to do is injure yourself.

Does the Proform 550R have Bluetooth connection?

Unfortunately, the ProForm 550R doesn’t have Bluetooth connectivity. This is one feature I’d love ProForm to add in the near future so that you can link up your fitness trackers to the rowing machine and receive all of your workout information.

Is Proform 550R compatible with iFit?

Yes and no. The ProForm 550R doesn’t use iFit, but you could purchase the iFit app and use it with your rowing machine. However, you won't be able to use features such as having the resistance level automatically changed by the instructor, etc.

Is Proform 550R easy or hard to maintain?

No, the ProForm 550R is extremely easy to maintain. All you need is a damp cloth to clean off any dirt, dust, and sweat from the machine.

Conclusion

ProForm 550R
  • Large LCD window, soft touch ergonomic...
  • Smr silent magnetic resistance, oversized...
  • Pivoting pedals with adjustable straps
  • Transport wheels, SpaceSaver design

Overall, the ProForm 550R is a good rowing machine for a beginner to start their rowing journey. The resistance would be no good for an advanced user, and the lack of advanced metrics would also make it unsuitable.

However, the ProForm 550R rowing machine does an excellent job for a low-budget rowing machine. Sure it could be a bit fancier and have more features, but its simplicity is part of the charm, in my opinion. Plus, it looks great and is highly compact.
