There are a lot of rumors out there about eggs. Some experts claim that you can’t eat eggs every day because they’ll raise your cholesterol levels. Other proclaim that it’s fine to eat at least one egg every single day – as long as you eat an otherwise healthy diet. Which is the truth?
Is it safe to eat one egg every day? How do you know what’s healthy and what isn’t? Let’s clear up some of this confusion.
Eggs Contain Plenty of Nutrients
Before we can answer the question of is it safe to eat one egg every day, we need to discuss what makes eggs so important. They are actually a vital part of people’s diets, simply because they contain a number of nutrients. Some of these nutrients include vitamin D, riboflavin, selenium, choline, lutein, and more.
However, eggs also contain a lot of cholesterol. This is particularly true of the egg yolk, where a lot of that cholesterol resides. The next time you’re at the store, pay attention in the dairy section, where you’ll see several containers of separated egg whites for sale.
They are sold in this format so that people can avoid eating the yolks if they absolutely must. With that said, eggs (yolks and all) aren’t exactly bad for you.)
What the Studies Have Shown
Some studies have been conducted where the subjects ate several whole eggs (up to three) every single day. Throughout the process, their cholesterol levels were checked. The results were amazing. In most cases, the amount of good cholesterol in their bodies went up quite a bit, while their bad cholesterol levels only went up slightly. Why did this happen?
Since the liver is what produces cholesterol in the body, when foods are eaten that contain this substance, the liver needs to produce a smaller amount of cholesterol. With that said, in some super-responders, their bad cholesterol levels went up during the course of the study.
So, let’s answer that question. Is it safe to eat one egg every day? The correct response is – absolutely. You can eat one egg every day without having to worry about your cholesterol levels or any other detrimental health issues, as long as you aren’t one of those super-responders.
Also, if your cholesterol levels are already high, then you need to be even more careful, and should probably limit your egg intake (or just skip the yolks.)
